Molecular Basis of Risk Assessment

Admission to Program:

The Steering Committee is responsible for the initial evaluation of all applicants. They recommend acceptable candidates to the Director of Graduate Studies in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences. Grade point average; scores on the Graduate Record Examination, and three letters of recommendation are considered. When an applicant is identified as a potential trainee, the Program Director will coordinate all recruitment efforts including telephone calls, correspondence, and visits by the applicant to the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health. The Dean of the Graduate School makes the final decision about candidate acceptance. Once a student has elected to accept admission to the training program, a temporary advisor will be assigned to incoming students from the list of preceptors alphabetically. The role of the Temporary advisor is to help students select courses, and to select rotations, based on the research interest of the student. Once a research laboratory is selected, the Principal Investigator of that laboratory will become the student's academic advisor.

The Steering Committee will review student progress on a yearly basis to ensure students are making timely progress to their degree. Members of the Steering Committee include Dr. Steven Hecht, Dr. Lisa A. Peterson, Dr. Leslie Robison, Dr. William A. Toscano, Jr, and Dr. Elizabeth V. Wattenberg, Director of Graduate Studies in Environmental Health. Each member of the Steering Committee will be responsible for various aspects of the program. Dr. Hecht will coordinate activities of the exposure assessment component of the program. Dr. Peterson will coordinate the toxicology component, Dr. Robison will be responsible for the epidemiology component, Dr. Sexton will coordinate the policy component, and Dr. Wattenberg will be responsible for relaying to the graduate school recommendations for funding and ensuring that award of stipends is made in a timely manner.
