Highlights and Photos from the March 2006 Get Your Rear in Gear 5k Walk/Run

The Division of Environmental Health Sciences was pleased to sponsor a team for the first time to participate in the 2nd Annual Colon Cancer Coalition's “Get Your Rear in Gear” 5K walk/run at Lake Harriet on March 25, 2006. Funds raised from run/walk are directed to the Minnesota Colon and Rectal Foundation in their continuing efforts to raise awareness of this disease and other colorectal disorders with the public and medical professionals throughout the state. A portion of the funds are also directed to the national endowment fund to help start races in other cities and states.

The 2006 race at Lake Harriet included over 2,665 participants-almost doubling the participation in 2005. The race was well organized with over 100 volunteers and several major sponsors. The weather on race day was very comfortable and the route which took us around Lake Harriet made for a very enjoyable walk on an early spring day.

Team EnHS included 17 faculty, staff, students, and their friends. We were happy to also drop off donations from a few supporters who were unable to participate in the race. Because our division has a long history of being involved with colon cancer research, taking part in this event gave us the opportunity to "walk the talk" and promote awareness and screening for colorectal cancer. We were thrilled to be able to pull together a team so quickly and we look forward to expanding this effort every year, making this an annual division event.
