Bill Toscano, Division Head, was named a fellow of the 2006 American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world. The honor is bestowed upon members by their peers. Fellows are recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications. (12/06)
Professor Gurumurthy Ramachandran has been appointed to the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) Board of Scientific Counselors. The Board advises on the directions that NIOSH scientific research takes. (12/06)
Carl Herbrandson, Ph.D has been appointed an adjunct assistant professor in EnHS. Dr. Herbranson is an alumnus of the division (Ph.D. 1996) and is currentaly a research scientist at the Minnesota Department of Health focusing on human health risk assessment. He teaches and lectures in regulatory toxicology and risk assessment. (08/06)
Sibel Erkal, PhD, is a visiting associate professor from Hacettepe University (Ankara, Turkey), School of Home Economics, Department of Family and Consumer Science. Dr. Erkal is is visiting our division until mid-December (office: 1252 Mayo). Her research experience includes injuries associated with children and the elderly. She is collaborating with Dr. Susan Gerberich and other colleagues and students on various relevant research efforts. (08/06)
Susan G. Gerberich, Ph.D., Professor, (left) was presented the EnHS Faculty Excellence Award by Bill Toscano, Division Head. This award is made annually by the graduating class for excellence of graduate instruction and progress in the professional development of the graduate students in the past academic year. (06/06).
The School of Public Health's P&A Excellence Award was conferred on a member of the academic professional and administrative (P&A) staff in recognition of distinguished contributions to the School and the University. Andrew Ryan, research fellow in EnHS, received this award for his outstanding work in managing complex databases and mentoring of students in data analysis. (05/06)

Professor Lisa Brosseau is the 2006 Alice Hamilton Awardee from the American Industrial Hygiene Association. This award, established in 1993, recognizes outstanding women for their achievements and contributions to the field of occupational hygiene. The Alice Hamilton Award is presented annually to an outstanding woman who has made a definitive, lasting achievement in the field of occupational and environmental hygiene through public and community service, social reform, technological innovation or advancements in the scientific approach to the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. The awardee shall have been engaged in occupational hygiene or a related discipline a minimum of 10 years and shall be recognized by her peers to be competent in her chosen field, dedicated to scientific truth, and committed to positive change for worker health.
Student News:
Mira Grice, PhD Candidate received a Delta Omega Honorary Public Health Society Student Poster Award for her poster titled "The Impact of Work-Family Conflict on Maternal Health Six Months After Childbirth." Mira was awarded $500 from the Dean's office (SPH) as well as $250 from Delta Omega. (11/06)
The Delta Omega Society inducted three EnHS students into its organization: Amanda Blasiak, Tricia Carmody and Ramona Johnson. Delta Omega is the honor society for graduate studies in public health. Student membership is based on outstanding academic performance. (05/06)
Mira Grice (Ph.D. candidate) received an award for a poster she submitted to the Delta Omega poster contest. This national competition is sponsored by the Association of Schools of Public Health and the Delta Omega Honor Society. Mira won a cash prize and an opportunity to present her work at the American Public Health Association annual meeting. (05/06)
Quintin Williams, is the 2005-2006 recipient of the Minnesota Environmental Health Association (MEHA)'s Mary Lauren Olson Memorial Scholarship. Quintin is a first year doctoral student in the Environmental Health Sciences program with a concentration on occupational injury prevention. His goals are to prevent injuries in industrials settings by researching ergonomics, safety engineering and human factors contributing to injuries. Quentin was recognized at the MEHA Winter conference held on February 9, 2006. (02/06)
EnHS student Perry Logan (PhD candidate) is the 2006 Kusnetz Award Recipient. This award, presented by the American Industrial Hygiene Association, honors a certified hygienist under the age of 40 who has been employed in the private sector for a majority of his/her career; who by exhibiting high ethical standards and technical abilities has provided the highest standards of health and safety protection; and who shows promise of leadership in the industrial hygiene profession.
Tricia Carmody, a masters student in environmental health sciences, is one of six students nationwide to receive a 2005 Industrial Hygiene Scholarship from 3M Corporation. As a winner of the $5,000 scholarship, awarded by the 3M Occupational Health and Safety Division, she was recognized for academic excellence and related work experience. (08/05)

EnHS sponsored for the first time a team to participate in the 2nd Annual Colon Cancer Coalition's Get Your Rear in Gear 5K walk/run at Lake Harriet on March 25, 2006. Funds raised from run/walk are directed to the Minnesota Colon and Rectal Foundation in their continuing efforts to raise awareness of this disease and other colorectal disorders with the public and medical professionals throughout the state.
