Timothy is an MPH student concentrating in global environmental health. Tim received a BS degree from Ohio State University in plant biology with an emphasis in plant ecology. Before entering the EnHs program he worked for the Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador as an Agroforestry volunteer where he aided a rural community in identifying development needs and implementing community based projects related to agriculture and the environment. Tim plans to use his education to work directly with communities in developing countries to help them address their public health needs. Tims advisor is Dr. Gurumurthy Ramachandran.

Herbert Bosch Award
Jason Grengs
The Herbert Bosch Award was established in 1963 to memorialize a man who had done much to further the cause of mankind. Each year the graduating class votes for its member who "best exemplifies the traits of kindness and regard for the welfare of humanity."
Jason is an MPH student in Environmental Health Sciences. He earned his BA from the University of Minnesota Duluth in psychology and biology and a Certificate of Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota. Jason currently works in the division as a community health coordinator for the Home Allergen Reduction Study, and previously worked on several division epidemiological studies under the direction of Tim Church. He is interested in the field of auto-immune disease research. His advisor is Dr. Bruce Alexander.
Evette is a Ph.D. student in Environmental Health Sciences specializing in environmental epidemiology (injury prevention). She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in general biology at the University of Maryland and completed her Master of Public Health degree at Drexel University. Her research interests are in highway traffic safety. Her current research concerns fatigue and truck related crashes, both fatal and non-fatal. Her advisor is Dr. Susan Gerberich.

Julie is an MPH student in Environmental Health Sciences specializing in environmental infectious diseases. She received a Bachelor of Sciences degree in medical microbiology and immunology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before starting the MPH program, she worked in a HIV vaccine development laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Julie currently works at the Minnesota Department of Health in the foodborne illness unit and is involved with a research project to develop environmental sampling techniques for foodborne pathogens. Juliess advisor is Dr. Craig Hedberg.

Penny is receiving her Ph.D at this years commencement ceremony. Penny received her Masters degree in anthropology from Iowa State University, and based her masters thesis on field research in Nigeria on woman farmers. While at Iowa State she worked as a research associate at the Center for Indigenous Knowledge for Agricultural and Rural Development. She received an MPH in Public Health Administration at the University of Minnesota and for her masters project produced video tapes addressing mammography and breast cancer for several immigrant groups. As a doctoral student in Environmental Health Sciences she studied the effects of environmental policy on the health of ethnically diverse and socio- economically disadvantaged groups. Her Ph.D. thesis is on the health effects of indoor air pollution on women in Mysore, India. Her advisor is Dr. Gurumurthy Ramachandran.

Karen is an MPH student in Environmental Health Sciences concentrating in global environmental health. She has an undergraduate degree in civil/environmental engineering from Virginia Tech, and spent four years living and working in El Salvador as a Peace Corps volunteer, and later working for the Cooperative Housing Foundation where she supervised reimplementation of water access to over 500 families in 25 communities after massive 2001 earthquakes. Karen plans to use her MPH to gain a deeper understanding of population issues and health policy. Karens advisor is Dr. John Adgate.

Cecelia Goetz Memorial Scholarship
Holly Heisler
Holly is an MPH student in Environmental Health Sciences with an interest in global environmental health. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in natural resources and environmental studies from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in resource protection. Her research interests are integrating urban environmental health issues into sustainable development, immigrant womens health, and the use of traditional medicines. She taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in the Twin Cities for three years, primarily with the adult East African immigrant population, which encouraged her to get an MPH degree. Her research project/field experience will involve looking into the management of water resources and urban environmental health outcomes as part of sustainable development efforts in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Her advisor is Dr. Bill Toscano.

Penny Bartz
Penny is an MPH student in Environmental Health Sciences concentrating in global environmental health and occupational health nursing. Penny received a BA in Nursing and a BA in Biology from St. Olaf College. She currently works as an RN at the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute as well as the Minnesota Department of Health working in the area of meth lab clean up. Penny plans to use her education to work with the complex health and environmental issues affecting refugee and immigrant populations in this country. Pennys advisor is Dr. Bruce Alexander.
Samuel Paul Kingston Health Equity Scholarship
Tiana Philibert
Tiana is an MPH student in Environmental Health Sciences specializing in environmental infectious diseases and food safety. She received a Bachelor of Arts in biology with a minor in psychology from Luther College. She spent ten months as a member of AmeriCorps (National Civilian Community Corps) and performed over 1700 hours of community service in the southeastern United States. Those experiences inspired her to want to focus in public health and work with people to strengthen themselves and their communities. Her advisor is Dr. Craig Hedberg.
