Measuring Human Exposure to the Agent
Criteria pollutants receive the most attention in terms of measurement and monitoring because of their potential for reduction.
- Particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide from diesel combustion are therefore areas of emphasis.
- These pollutants have many sources, however, in addition to diesel exhaust, and hence the combined set of emissions affect the individual breathing the air, and so measurements of these irritants do not distinguish the sources.
- Because enforcement of air pollution standards comes from the Clean Air Act and its amendments, measurement and monitoring is done in compliance with its geographical regions.
